  • UK gambling sector odds-on for more M&A says Markit analyst

Relte Stephen Schutte, analyst at Markit, says a lack of growth is the main driving force behind the consolidation among UK bookmakers. Ladbrokes recently announced the acquisition of competitor Coral, which would form the largest high-street bookmaker in the UK - Ladbrokes Coral. The deal will sees underlying earnings of the combined entity nearing £400mln. This will lift Ladbrokes ahead of William Hill to be largest high street book maker in the UK.

http://www.thebettingheadhunter.com - recruitment jobs in search for online gaming & gambling sector - Too many companies rely on recruitment agencies to filter out the vast amount of CVs currently flooding the international job boards when looking to fill vacancies. Admittedly its a job that most businesses are not geared up to do, so in a sense the recruiter is providing a much needed service, if thats what the hiring manager or HR professional perceives as value... The problem I have with this is that human capital is a very complex matter. Its not all about a CV and a race to get it on the desk of a client before the other 5 agencies! I constantly come across the comment from employers that they get the same CV from many different sources over a long period of time. Why wouldn't they?...

  • Online gambling: MEPs aim to better regulate sector's development

Online gambling as a sector was worth €6 bn in 2008 but by 2013 this figure is expected to double. It's a rapidly growing part of the wider gambling industry, which is worth around €80 bn and employs hundreds of thousands of people. However, at the moment online gambling is regulated largely at Member State level, with different rules and barriers for entry applying in different countries. Nevertheless, the European Commission released a green paper earlier in 2011 focusing on future regulatory developments in this sector and the European parliament has recently responded to the Commission with its own report on how to support this burgeoning industry.

My simple point today is that employers should expect to be introduced to candidates who are motivated to look at the opportunity on offer once the recruiter has completed a professional assessment and validation service, the extent of which can vary of course, but the client should know what that service is! Maybe employers are at fault? Perhaps they have made it too easy for recruitment agencies to become CV search administrators.... clearly many businesses see recruiters as a necessary evil and little more. recruitment jobs in search for online gaming & gambling sector - http://www.thebettingheadhunter.com - created at http://animoto.com

Dr Griffiths explains that Britain has historically shown a liberal attitude towards gambling and suggests about how government policies could be updated to ensure a healthier, fairer gaming sector in the future. In general, Dr Griffiths is positive about the status of gambling in British legislation over the last two decades, noting a clear tends towards "liberalisation and deregulation." However, he is less complementary of recent efforts to curb particular gambling practices. For instance, he notes the contradiction in heavily regulating Fixed Odds Betting Terminals (FOBTs) when similar games exist at the click of a button via online casinos. Additionally, he criticises the government's attempt to limit the proliferation of betting shops on British high streets, arguing that such action has no effect on addiction figures. "The fact is that [an] offline high street bookmaker has far more in terms of protective social measures than anything online. That's why I just think the arguments are null and void about the opening of more offline opportunities." Dr Griffiths is generally critical of prohibitionary attitudes towards gambling, pointing out that aggressive anti-gambling legislation tends to result in a 'black market' operating independently of the UK's taxable leisure industry. "I think we live in a mature society now and that gambling has always been around. Trying to instance limit it or prohibit it means it just gets taken underground." Referencing the recent FOBT controversy, Dr Griffiths argues that there should be a scientific basis for banning or limiting the distribution of any gambling product. "I don't think any form of gambling should be banned unless there is scientific evidence that it [causes undue harm.] The point is that fixed odd betting terminals are located within bookmaker shops or occasionally within some casinos. These are dedicated gambling environments. You can't walk into a bookmaker and not expect gambling experiences and gambling products to be offered for people to play." On the flipside, Dr Griffiths notes that the gambling industry has a responsibility to the nation in ensuring that its products are only marketed to adults. He voices disapproval of gambling adverts appearing during pre-watershed sporting events, for instance. Dr Griffiths is a Psychology lecturer for Nottingham Trent University and has been researching the psychology of gambling since the 1990s. In addition to his academic credentials and extensive bibliography, he is the co-founder of addiction charity GamCare, which provides a free helpline to problem gamblers and addicts throughout the United Kingdom. Dr Griffiths is recognised as one of the world's most preeminent experts on gambling and regularly publishes essays on this subject and others via his blog.
